A STUDENT from Passmores School in Harlow was crowned the local winner of a nationwide cooking competition on Thursday.
George Payne, 13, won the Essex heat of the FutureChef 2010 competition which was held at the Tendring Road school and involved three students from across the county.
Organised by the Springboard charity to inspire young chefs, the competition required the students to make a main course and a dessert in one and a half hours, on a budget of just £6.
The dishes were then judged on a number of criteria by professional chefs Stephen Carter, from Boodles and David Stanley from Aramark.
They said: "All the dishes were fantastic and we had to be very critical in order to separate them. A lot of thought and effort went into these dishes and its endearing to see that in such young people."
After a tense wait the Passmores pupil, who made chicken supreme with butternut squash risotto as his main course, was announced as the winner and received a cookery book. He will now be mentored by Stephen as he prepares for the next stage of the competition.
George said: "I've really enjoyed it today. I don't really know why I like cooking but it's good because you get to get your hands dirty and I love food!"
He will now go on to complete in the regional finals, which will be held at Thames Valley University in February, where he will have to prepare two dishes from a basket of set ingredients.
